Week of 5/30/17

The most talked about book for this week: When Dimple met Rishi.
For fans of historical fiction, check out Crossing Ebenezer Creek.  Madeline Roux brings a new horror series with the first book, House of Furies.  And if you love fantasy, don't miss Royal Bastards.  It's a week that will take you to places like Britain and Scotland, into K-dramas to royalty, thrillers and summer romance, fan fiction pieces to monsters.  Happy Reading!

When It's Real, by Erin Watt

Title: When It's Real, Author: Erin WattWealth, fame and a real-life romance she never expected—seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett lands it all when she agrees to become a pop star's fake girlfriend in this smart, utterly addictive novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt
Under ordinary circumstances, Oakley Ford and Vaughn Bennett would never even cross paths.
There's nothing ordinary about Oakley. This bad-boy pop star's got Grammy awards, millions of fangirls and a reputation as a restless, too-charming troublemaker. But with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley needs to show the world he's settling down—and who better to help him than Vaughn, a part-time waitress trying to help her family get by? The very definition of ordinary.
Posing as his girlfriend, Vaughn will overhaul Oakley's image from troublemaker to serious artist. In return for enough money to put her brothers through college, she can endure outlandish Hollywood parties and carefully orchestrated Twitter exchanges. She'll fool the paparazzi and the groupies. She might even start fooling herself a little.
Because when ordinary rules no longer apply, there's no telling what your heart will do…
"Full of glitz and glamour, with just enough "normal" thrown in, this story speeds readers along through the bumps and bruises of this budding relationship. Oakley's and Vaughn's alternating voices flow smoothly, and if there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever about the end of the journey, getting there is undeniable fun. A quintessential beach read" -Kirkus Reviews

Royal Bastards, book 1 of the Royal Bastards series by Andrew Shvarts

Title: Royal Bastards, Author: Andrew ShvartsBeing a bastard blows. Tilla would know. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children.
At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax's floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father's side, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who's been in love with Tilla since they were children.
Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards' Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.
Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana's uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.
The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart-if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey . . .
"Shvart's action-packed debut champions diversity, counsels perseverance, and highlights the human cost of war. The pace is zippy, Shvart's mythology is rich, and...the conclusion packs thrills and a serious emotional wallop."—Publisher's Weekly

Week of 5/22/17

While Lord of Shadows may be the most anticipated novel for this week, be sure to check out The Fashion Committee.  For historical fiction fans, Refuge for Masterminds is the third book in the Stranje House series (the author is currently working on book 4) and for fans of graphic novels, look for Honor Girl.  This week is also a huge release week for audiobooks.  Happy Reading!!

The Fashion Committee by Susan Juby

Title: The Fashion Committee, Author: Susan Juby"The Fashion Committee is another winner by one of my all time favorite authors."—Meg Cabot, New York Times bestselling author of the The Princess Diaries and Mediator series
Charlie Dean is a style-obsessed girl who eats, sleeps, and breathes fashion. John Thomas-Smith is a boy who forges metal sculptures in his garage and couldn’t care less about clothes. Both are gunning for a scholarship to the private art high school that could make all their dreams come true. Whoever wins the fashion competition will win the scholarship—and only one can win.
Told in the alternating voices of Charlie’s and John’s journals, this hilarious and poignant YA novel perfectly captures what it’s like to have an artistic drive so fierce that nothing—not your dad’s girlfriend’s drug-addicted ex-boyfriend, a soul-crushing job at Salad Stop, or being charged with a teensy bit of kidnapping—can stand in your way.
With black and white art custom-created by fashion and beauty illustrator Soleil Ignacio, the book is a collector’s item, perfect for anyone with a passion for fashion.
"Entertaining, smart, and inspiring."—Kirkus Reviews
